Parents are often looking for safe and effective ways to help their children be well and thrive.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective healing modality that has been used for over 2,000 years to enhance the body’s natural ability to heal itself. People of all ages, from infants to elders can benefit from this medicine. This ancient healing art is still effective today in helping us stay peaceful and healthy amidst our modern day toxins, environment and stressors.
Acupuncture activates the body’s innate healing potential. Starting this process at a young age has countless benefits for your child.
When should I come for acupuncture treatment?
Acupuncture provides great support for anyone who is experiencing an acute or chronic ailment. You can bring your child for treatment at the fist signs of a cold or illness, and when it lingers on preventing full recovery. The treatments help you heal your body naturally without depleting the body and without unwanted side effects.
And you don’t have to be sick to benefit from acupuncture. Receiving regular acupuncture treatments enhances your immune system so you can keep feeling well.
Some common pediatric conditions treated include:
- Anxiety & depression
- Behavioral issues
- Coughs & colds
- Digestive issues
- Ear infections
- Eczema and other skin problems
- Tummy aches
A typical session:
All sessions begin with a conversation with the parent and the child to track the healing process. We celebrate any healing progress and note areas for further improvement. I also give the parents suggestions for things they can do at home to support the healing process of the child.
Pediatric treatments are gentle and brief as you can see in the videos below. When acupuncture needles are used, they stay in for just a few seconds, or a little bit longer as the older more experienced kids tend to prefer.
I follow the comfort level of the child and use needle and/or non-needle techniques to help the body heal itself naturally without any side effects.
Acupuncture for kids is different because:
Pediatric Acupuncture needles are thinner than three hairs and nothing like needles used for blood tests or vaccines. I call the needle treatments “taps” because i simply tap the needle in quickly and gently and then remove it right away. As the children get more comfortable with the taps, they may choose to leave them in longer. Parents are pleasantly surprised when their children find the treatments easy, painless and even fun.
Children do not need to stay still to receive a treatment. Their quick moving energy is an asset in their healing. The treatments are often playful and celebratory.
It is perfectly fine to use acupuncture in conjunction with any other treatment modalities you choose. I understand that as parents, we try to do everything we can to help our children. It is my goal to work with you and your children to build your child’s resilience.
What if my child is afraid of needles?
Many children are not ready to receive a needle treatment until they become more comfortable with me and trust that the “taps” are so thin and painless.
Luckily there are several non-needle techniques, which generate the same desired results of a healthier more resilient child.
Shonishin, for example, is a Japanese technique in which small metal tools are tapped or glided gently against the skin to disperse sickness and to tonify and strengthen the body.
Here is a picture of me doing a shonishin treatment for this girl’s sore throat.
How often & how much does it cost?
Acupuncture is a cumulative medicine that is best used on a regular basis. Depending on the duration and severity of your child’s issues, I recommend coming 1-3 times/week at first. Every few weeks we reevaluate and have the goal of monthly wellness treatments for your child.
The initial treatment costs $125 and follow ups are $90. The length of the session will vary depending on the child and the day. Typically treatments are 30 minutes long and I take some time beforehand to talk on the phone or email with the parent or caregiver.

“Rachel treated my son for several years. My son was a teen at the time and non-verbal and non-mobile. Rachel was always compassionate and understanding. Her treatments made my son calm and relaxed and were complimentary to other holistic therapies we were doing. He never minded the needles. Rachel was always sensitive to his needs and directed her treatments to those needs.”
“Rachel is insightful, curious and truly empathetic. I am impressed by her open heart and compassion.”
“As a mom, it’s not easy to find a practitioner I can really trust to be gentle, respectful, and clear with me and my children. I find all of those qualities and more in Rachel Kriger. Rachel has treated my son on a few occasions. Each time, I have wondered, what will this be like? And each time, I’ve been truly enamored with the way that she connects with him. To begin with, Rachel’s presence is naturally authentic and calming. Children are so sensitive and perceptive of the energy in the room! Then, Rachel asks simple and direct questions that somehow draw out what she needs to know to proceed with the treatment. I think her secret lies in the way she listens – deeply and without judgement – to what my son is really communicating. Then, she stays tuned in to him throughout the treatment so that he continues to feel safe and comfortable. Rachel remains a responsive, listening presence throughout. Afterwards, my son looks so relaxed and at peace while the healing capacity of his own body begins to work more efficiently. I highly recommend Rachel Kriger for families with children seeking deep but gentle healing.”
“Rachel worked with my daughter during her freshman year in high school after she suffered a severe concussion. Rachel has a special way of working with young people and helping them to relax and feel comfortable with the treatment. The acupuncture treatments helped manage my daughters headaches and brain fog from the concussion.”
