FAQ- Finding Some Wisdom in the Unknown

Below are the answers to many common questions. Please feel free to contact Rachel if you want to ask her your specific questions directly.

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a 5,000-year-old system of Holistic Medicine that treats the root of illness in the body, mind, and spirit. Qi (pronounced “Chee”) is life energy that moves through the body along pathways called meridians. Over 365 acupuncture points are located on these meridians. The thin wires, called needles, are used to stimulate the immune system and to remind your body of its natural ability to heal itself, to return to a state of ease.

Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very thin- about the size of a few human hairs. Each person experiences the insertion of needles differently. You may feel a pinch, a zing, or a dull ache as the needle is inserted, which then dissipates. The benefits of acupuncture will outweigh any pain you may feel from the needles.

Is it safe?
Yes. I use pre-packaged, sterilized needles that are carefully discarded after each use. We will discuss any possible risks before you sign the consent to services agreement.

How do I know if I need acupuncture?
I always say, nobody needs acupuncture, AND anyone can benefit from acupuncture. You may be one of these people if you hold the following three keys:
1)    You are experiencing pain, stress or stuckness in ANY area of your life (this describes most people)
2)    You are looking for some empowerment in relating to your symptoms
3)   You are willing to be an observer of your body and listen to its wisdom

How can I benefit from acupuncture treatment?
The World Health Organization recognizes Acupuncture as an effective treatment for over two hundred disorders, including, but not limited to Allergies, Back, Hip and Joint Pain, Mood Swings,  Fatigue, Addiction, Carpal Tunnel, Migraines, Depression, Anxiety & Stress, Stiff Neck, Sinusitis, Asthma & Respiratory Ailments, PMS, Digestive Ailments, and more… That said, I have been trained to treat the whole person. Acupuncture works by reminding you that YOU work.

The needle treatments, combined with your commitment to your own health, are designed to remind your body how to follow the laws of nature to return to optimal health.

Many people who have received regular treatment report that they:

–       Are sick less often, and recover more quickly from illness
–       Have increased stamina and vitality
–       Have learned to become more active in maintaining their own health
–       Have more harmonious relationships with themselves and others

How soon will I get better once I begin treatment?
Each person responds to acupuncture uniquely. Often, the body needs time to heal. Generally, the longer you have been experiencing the symptom, the longer it will take to notice a shift. That said, It is possible to experience relief after only one treatment. Once you notice relief, it is very important to keep coming regularly to do the deeper healing that is necessary to maintain wellness.

It is best to start off by coming for treatment once a week for 6-8 weeks in a row. Each session will involve a discussion to see what you have learned about your body and to monitor your progress. Once you learn practices and lifestyle improvements to stay well, you may choose to come in less often. This is a personal preference. Some like to come every other week, or once a month, or each season for a tune-up.

It is important to remember that you can come for acupuncture treatment when you feel well in order to keep feeling well.

Should I Continue to See My Regular Doctor?
Absolutely!  Acupuncture compliments Western medicine quite well. Some patients find that with treatment their need for some medications may diminish. And, in order to do this, you must work closely with your doctor to make these adjustments safely.

What is Five Element style acupuncture?
The Five elements are represented at the top of each page on this website. Earth/Late summer, Metal/Autumn, Water/Winter, Wood/Spring, and Fire/Summer. (photos taken by Mirah Kriger)

Five Element Acupuncture is designed to help a person at his or her deepest level to move smoothly through the year’s seasons and through life’s ups and downs. The cycle of seasons can be simplified into two directions: Rising and Falling and rising again and so on.

This cycle occurs as the seasons change, and it also occurs in every month, in every day, in every breath, and in every lifetime. Traditional five element acupuncture functions on the levels of the body, mind, emotions and spirit.

Again, you need not have a physical illness to experience the benefits of acupuncture treatment.

Why “Points of Return”?
There are over 365 acupuncture points on the body to support your desire to return to your true nature and your body’s innate ability to heal. Any time we are in opposition to what is so, we could say that we are in a state of dis-ease. From here, we can choose to take effective action or let go of the upset, concern or complaint. This takes practice! Anyone who comes to receive treatment from me can learn this art of returning to a state of ease. It is my job to stay present with you and artfully choose points to guide you on your unique path of return.
